Two thousand years ago, a small insect built the world’s first global supply chain. At Loopworm, we’re building the New Silk Road. Same insect harnessed for its limitless potential to produce proteins.
In 2019, two IIT Roorkee engineers, Ankit Alok Bagaria and Abhi Gawri, came across a UN report titled “Insects are the Future of Food & Feed.” That became the starting point for Loopworm.
After piloting several insects, one stood apart: silkworms. Bombyx mori comes with centuries of domestication, 150+ years of research, 20+ years of bioinformatics data, and a living ecosystem of over a million farmers across India who have been rearing it for generations.
The science and supply chain already exists. Silkworms already produce nature’s most structurally complex proteins. What it lacks is the infrastructure to take it from farms to labs to markets. Ankit & Abhi looked at this as an engineering problem and set out to build something that holds at scale, under pressure, for the long run.
We started where the market was clearest: animal nutrition. Sustainable, functional ingredients for aquaculture, pets, and livestock which is now a profitable business. With this, we built commercial scale, supply chain depth, and years of silkworm expertise.
That foundation is now a launchpad. The same platform is producing recombinant proteins to meet rising demand across healthcare, biopharma, diagnostic reagents, and specialty enzymes with therapeutics as the long-term frontier.
The old silk road built the first blueprint for an interconnected world. The New Silk Road that Loopworm is building is all about making the interconnected world we live in prosper. We’re building the foundation for affordable and accessible healthcare, sustainable food systems and resilient supply chains which is good for people and the planet.

India’s sericulture heartland gives us an unmatched cost and supply chain advantage. We build to global standards: certified, export-ready, and backed by audited science. The world is our market.

We are building industrial-scale processes that take science from lab to market. Our focus is operational excellence, productivity, and reducing manufacturing waste at every step of the value chain.

Insects are nature’s most efficient converters — requiring a fraction of the land and water of conventional protein sources. We operate on a circular economy model, maximising value from every input and doing more with less.
