Silkworm Biofactories
for Recombinant Proteins

We utilize insects as a bioresource.

We develop technologies to process insects into value-added products.

The world is moving towards alternative bioresources and we choose insects because they are sustainable and have an abundance of proteins, fats, and biomolecules.

Humans have been using insect biomolecules for various products for centuries- bees for honey and beeswax. A red pigment called Carmine is made from cochineal insects which is used in the textiles and dyeing industry. The examples are endless.

Currently, we use silkworms to build sustainable and cost-effective solutions feasible for all markets, everywhere.

What are we Achieving?

Sustainability via insects

We are using insects as a sustainable bioresource to build valuable products. Humans are over-utilizing water and arable land and we require a sustainable alternative. We currently use insects like silkworms and black soldier flies which are high in proteins and fats and essential biomolecules.

Supporting Livelihoods

By utilizing insects to create products, we are creating a market for insect reelers. We create sustainable proteins from the spent pupae of silk reeling industry. There are about 1,20,000 silk reelers in India who are being supported by obtaining their spent puape and creating new channels of revenue generation along with a sustainable use of spent silk pupae.

Beyond Animal Nutrition

We are using insect derived biomolecules and creating sustainable solutions for cosmetics, human wellness and plant nutrition in addition to animal nutrition. For example, we are using Fibroin obtained from spent silkworm pupae and making organic coatings for fruits and vegetables to replace the usage of petrochemicals. We are extracting snail-mucin like Serecin with moisturizing and UV blocking properties from silkworms which is a sustainable alternative to snail mucin.

WHY INSECTS?

Rich in Nutrients

Rich in Nutrients

Insects contain all essential and non-essential amino acids, serving as a rich source of important PUFAs and bioactive peptides. This ensures productivity, growth, and immunity benefits for farmed animals, while also offering anti-aging and anti-allergic advantages for pets.

Wide Range of Applications icon

Wide Range of Applications

Insects are abundant in antimicrobial peptides, melanin, chitin, and other high-value biomolecules. These resources can foster the development of novel solutions for the health, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and bio-pharma industries.

Sustainable in Nature icon

Sustainable in Nature

Insect protein production requires 170 times less land and 200 times less water compared to soy protein production. They represent a scalable, sustainable solution to alleviate stress on wild marine fish populations, arable land, and potable water resources.

INNOVATION

We are building sustainable and scalable insect-based solutions in our LoopLab. With a research team of 30 scientists, engineers, and technicians, we work on building sustainable solutions for animal, plant and human nutrition and wellness.

IMPACT

We are built with sustainability in our core. Our insect-based solutions help in building a green planet.
